[Artist Highlight] Ema And The Ghosts

Ema And The Ghosts was one of those Myspace finds years ago that I just can’t stop going back to. Ema is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, the Ukelele and the accordian being the main instruments she uses in her songs. The combination of her simple and diverse instrumentation, picturesque lyrics, and catchy melodies give her a very unique sound that I never tire of.

She is located in Los Angeles but she rarely plays shows, I haven’t yet had the chance to see her but I would jump at the chance to.

[Creative Dev] You Lack Discpline!

Today’s topic is outside the range of partys and music, this goes into the reaches of artistic development and creativity. Since i’m all the way out in Europe (unsure when I’m to return) I’m focussing on making music and being creative. Posts from me may start to focus in that direction, we’ll see…

Anyways, one thing i’ve learned about being by myself for weeks with nothing needed to do except enjoy myself I’ve learned to start applying myself in ways that “i dont have time for”. Things such as meditating, producing music, exercising.

All these things sound nice to do, but the challenge is to them consistently. If you are to succeed in business on your own, whether you are; musician, painter, or entrepenuer working for yourself requires a lot of time and discipline.

After doing some research I found a great article on Self-Discpline that I want to share with all of you.

The article suggests making a goals/achievements list, I did this and it’s probably the MOST helpful tip.

I’d like to share a few goals…

1. To change the world, make it a better place

2. Experience the world, see adventure

3. Love

That’s it! Hopefully i’ll have enough self-discpline to keep this going.

Some silly folk remixed real news footage with auto-tune to make a hit song.

Mike Monday

Mike Monday has recently become my new favorite artists after venting his frustration and almost complete melt down at the prospect of making 10 tracks in 10 weeks. He teeters on perfectionism as he drops track after track each week. I love his production techniques and advice while being able to see a little behind the curtain of the legend who is Mike Monday. If you havent heard of him, check Mike out, his music is electronica, and moves from funky fresh to psychedelia. Really great stuff, use to maximum effect on a chilled out dance floor or in the car!

I happened to be watching late night TV over here in France, (I’m in Europe for a couple months) and I caught this on the BBC channel.
It’s called Parallel World, Parallel Lives a documentary following Mark Everett, the son of Hugh Everett, the scientist who discovered Parallel Worlds or realities. And get this! Mark is also in a big indie band, called Eels . Really interesting documentary where Mark embarks on an adventure to the east coast to learn about what exactly his father discovered and more importantly who his father was.

Here’s a quote from the film. ” One morning in 1982, when he was 18 years old, Hugh Everett’s son Mark discovered his father’s body at their Virginia home. (Mark’s mother and sister, Liz, were away.) Hugh, just 51, had had a fatal heart attack. Here was the first time that Mark could ever remember having physical contact with his father… “
